Workshop 8: The interface between Social Science and Animal
Science
The International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE) covers
all applied aspects of ethology and other behavioural sciences,
which are relevant to many human-animal interactions. The ISAE
is promoting research and education into the behaviour and
welfare of farm, laboratory, companion and zoo animals. An
international scientific congress is organized yearly in
different countries. The 38th congress will be held 3-7 August
2004 in Helsinki, Finland, where the latest results in applied
ethology research will be presented. This year one of the
workshops focuses on the interface between social and animal
science and we wish to also invite social scientists to this
workshop.
Only rarely are the issues of human-animal interaction studied
by both social scientist and animal scientist together, in spite
of the many benefits that may derive from interdisciplinary
efforts. The reason may be that social and animal scientists too
often seem to live in two different worlds, with different
conceptions of knowledge and different scientific methods.
The workshop "Interface between Social Science and Animal
Science" aims to create an arena for social and animal
scientists to discuss their knowledge and experiences of
studying common issues. In addition to the established studies
of animal production, there are examples of new fields where
social and animal sciences are interacting. Some animal
scientists are using methods from the toolbox of social
scientists, such as questionnaires, surveys or interviews, while
some social scientists define research questions that also could
be those of animal scientists, such as the human-animal
relationship or the significance of animals in human life.
Animals can for example function as treatment for sick or
handicapped persons.
In the workshop "Interface of social and animal sciences" we are
calling for papers discussing for example the following issues:
- Experiences of the interface between the social and animal
scientist: examples of multidisciplinary, transdisciplinary, or
integrated research;
- The challenges of animal production in the development of a
sustainable society and the interrelationships between the
ecological, economical and social dimensions of sustainability;
- Aspects of the human-animal relationship relating to both
fields of science;
- Changing social conditions and the human-animal interaction.
